ABOUT LIBRARY

Seth Soorajmull Jalan Girls' College came into existence on 2nd August 1954 in the premises of Seth Soorajmull Jalan Smriti Bhawan, 186 Chittaranjan Avenue, Kolkata, under the affiliation of the University of Calcutta. With the establishment of the College, the necessity of the College library, which is the part and parcel of the education, was experienced and under the kind guidance of founder President Seth M. L. Jalan, secretary Shri D.D. Chhaochharia, founder, Principal Dr. I.V. Singh, Vice-President Prof. M. Raychoudhury and Prof. Vimla Gupta (Head of the Department of Hindi) the College library was set up in a separate room on the 2nd floor. Besides the College library, there was provision for teachers and students of the College to utilize the facility of library and reading hall of Seth Soorajmull Jalan Pustakalaya situated on the first floor of the same premises. This pustakalaya is a very rich library in north Kolkata for Hindi and Sanskrit literature. Beside books this pustakalaya provided several newspapers and periodicals to the students of the College for the advancement of their knowledge. Due to the increasing number of students, the space for the collapse became short, keeping in view the development of the College, the Governing Body decided to shift the College and the College was shifted in Sep.- Oct. 1969 to the present premises, 8-9, Bankim Chatterjee Street, Kolkata- 700 073 in its own premises. In this premises there is ample space for the library. The library is on the first floor covering entire area of 123'.3" X 70'.10" fits. The library Hall includes the stock area, lending and reference section separately provided to the professors and students of the College. With the College fund and UGC grants there are sufficient books in the library on various subjects of Arts and Commerce streams with Honours and General subjects. A good number of text books and reference books according to University of Calcutta revised syllabus are available in the library.


MEMBERSHIP

Teaching & Non-Teaching staff will automatically become library members. Students will become a member after showing their Admission Receipt or ID card.

LIBRARY TIMING:

Issue & Return (Home & Reading Room) Timing for the Students: for B.A. & B.Com., 1 st - 6 th Semester, All Classes, Monday - Friday: 8:00 am to 12:30 pm; Saturday: 8:00 am to 12.30 pm (On Demand). Library Recess: 9:30 am to 10:00 am.

LIBRARY RULES

  1. Number of Books that can be borrowed by the students:
    • a. Only one (01) book will be issued to a student of BA/B.Com 1st to 4th Semester at a time.
    • b. Only two (02) books will be issued to a student of BA/B.Com 5th and 6th Semester at a time.
  2. Duration of borrowing books for students:
    • a. All students can borrow books for 15 days.
  3. Late fine of Rs. 1/- will be charged for each day and for each book, if the book is not returned on the stipulated time.
  4. A borrower may be called to return the books issued before the due date if required urgently in the library.
  5. The reference books, rare books, current and bound periodicals etc. are intended to be used only in the reading section.
  6. Members should thoroughly check books before, getting them issued, Missing pages, torn pages, pages underlined or highlighted, damaged binding or any other defect should be immediately brought to the notice of the person at the issue counter. This is important; otherwise, the onus of such defects will fall on the members.
  7. While leaving the library, borrowers should ensure that they carry only those books that are duly issued in their name. Disciplinary action will be taken against anyone who is found guilty of violating the rule.
  8. For loss, damage, defacement or mutilation of any publication, the member who is held responsible or his guardian shall be liable to compensate the loss of the library.
  9. The lost/damaged document shall be replaced by the borrower with latest edition. If the damaged document belongs to a set, then the user is responsible to compensate the entire set.
  10. Membership cards are non-transferable. Impersonation is strictly prohibited.
  11. Reissue of book(s) is allowed only if no other students apply for it.
  12. Books are to be returned before every long vacation. Books may be issued for the vacation on special permission or requisition.
  13. Internet browsing is for academic use only. Members are prohibited from using this facility for e-mail, chat or social networking.
  14. Please do not use USB port.
  15. Do not install or uninstall any program or service in any computer.
  16. Students will be eligible for reading, lending books against library cards. Without proper library card no student will be issued books.
